Earlier this month, I got my issue of Family Fun in the mail (I can’t recommend this magazine enough – it’s the best magazine for families). Inside were some ideas for fun April Fools’ Day dinners and desserts.

So tonight I made little individual meatloaves in cupcake cups, frosted with colored mashed potatoes. The kids thought they were cupcakes until they took a bite! Dessert was “grilled cheese sandwiches” – I sliced a pound cake and toasted the slices. Then I colored some frosting to look like cheese, and spread some on one piece of toasted pound cake, topped with another, and pushed down a bit so that some oozed out the side like melted cheese would. Even after discovering that the cupcakes were actually meatloaves, they still thought that the grilled cheese sandwiches sitting on the table were grilled cheese sandwiches.

They loved the joke. I can’t wait to do something like that again.
